About AMADEUS

Winner of 7 Tony Awards including Best Play, Amadeus explodes with musical masterpieces and richness of language, harkening back to times of excess and indulgence. Called “triumphant” by The New York Times, this Renaissance drama takes us back to 18th-Century Europe and the tumultuous rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. Falsely befriending Mozart, the jealous and power-hungry Salieri hopes to socially and politically ruin his opponent and inhibit Mozart’s legacy. Jim Petosa (who directed New Rep’s Three Viewings, The Last Five Years, and Opus) directs this engaging drama, in which Salieri questions God for unfairly favoring Mozart.

Riveting.

"Weighty stuff. Yet a prime virtue of the New Rep's robustproduction, directed with brio by Jim Petosa, is that it reminds us what a ripping good yarn "Amadeus'' is...”

"It's an ambitious play for the New Repertory Theatre to take on, but they do a masterful job of it, with Jim Petosa, who's the artistic director of the company, directing the show"

"A Winning cast."

"Haffer's epic play has the capacity to transport us to 18th-century Europe with his well-crafted story, and Petosa and company do it justice."

“A feast for the eyes and ears, the New Rep's Amadeus is a delicious, bittersweet confection that captures both the divine and the decadent aspects of genius and obsession."

“DirAD feast for the Director Jim Petosa and company capture the lavish, arch style of the late 18th century, aided in good measure by Frances Nelson McSherry's rich, sumptuous costumes and Rachel Padula's Shufelt'sgorgeous wigs."

"Evett's performance reaches places that F. Murray Abraham's filmic turn as Salieri did not; and while Tom Hulce's movie Mozart might be remembered by its vivid embrace of the lewd and bizarre (and the film was certainly marketed accordingly, at the time), Tim Spears presents us a man whose direct access to unbridled enthusiasm is the key to his artistic inspiration."

"A stupendous, spectacular production..."

"Director Jim Petosa's staging of Peter Shaffer's Tony-winning script never plays it safe.
The one directive in this production is to make every moment interesting, and Petosa populates the stage with imaginative scene-stealing characters who say so much with their very humpfs and sighs."Click here to read the full review on NE Theatre Geek.

"Evett leads an excellent ensemble cast, in full command throughout in a theatrical tour de force."Click here to read the full review in On Boston Stages.

"Whether or not you require absolution, you should make a pilgrimage to this wonderful resurrection of a marvelous play, if only for its power to transport theatergoers to a higher plane. In a year that began with the terrific "Kite Runner", this is the perfect bookend to a very satisfying season. This production is so divine, it borders on the infallible."Click here to read the full review on South Shore Critic.
