2009-2010 MAINSTAGE SEASON: Finding Inspiration
KATE WARNER'S INAUGURAL SEASON
DEAR FRIEND:
Welcome to New Rep's 26th Season, my first as New Rep's Artistic Director!
I am thrilled to be in Boston and to have started my new position at New Rep. I moved from Atlanta to Boston because of the city's vibrant arts and theatre community. I was attracted to New Rep for its strong national reputation of producing innovative works to the highest standards of excellence and its mission of producing plays that speak powerfully to the essential ideas of our time.
I love directing—interpreting scripts and working with actors and designers are among my greatest joys! The kind of work I want to do is work that is relevant to the community, and the artistic choices I make support a balanced season of new works, comedies, musicals, interpretations of classics, ensemble-developed works, and moving dramas. I aim to tell stories that are current, smart, and presented in a sophisticated way through an accessible live theatrical experience. I value developing works from up-and-coming writers, and I personally enjoy contemporary classics and comedies.
I cherish live theatre—the personal connection and social interaction it provides is matchless. I want to change people's perspectives on what it means to go to the theatre. I wish for your experience at the theatre to be complete—meaningful, enjoyable, and engaging.
For my inaugural season, I was drawn to plays where the characters find inspiration in trying and changing times. The season explores this theme through different perspectives, different theatrical styles, and different eras of theatre. Whether it is on the deck of a WWII navy cargo ship in the timeless classic Mister Roberts, singing and dancing to the snazzy tunes in the musical adaptation Hot Mikado, or laughing at one man's attempt to preserve the human race in the New England Premiere boom, inspiration can be found!
